The Story Behind “Even the Skies”
I started writing “Even the Skies” while driving to my friend Kathy’s hospice center. She was in the final stage of her battle with cancer, and the heartbreak of watching someone you love suffer is hard to put into words.
“Even the skies have tears…”
That day, the rain was coming down, and I began singing, “even the skies have tears…” It felt like creation itself was grieving. The storm outside matched the sorrow we were all carrying inside.
Kathy was not just fighting cancer. She was walking toward heaven, and those of us who loved her were walking with her as far as we could.
Then something remarkable happened.
When Kathy went to be with Jesus, the storm that had lingered for days stopped. The skies cleared. That night, when we walked outside, there was a full moon and the clouds were absolutely stunning. The next day brought one of the most beautiful sunsets I had seen in a long time.
As I called people to let them know Kathy had passed, so many of them said the same thing: What a beautiful day it is.
That was the heart behind this song.
“Even the Skies” is about deep grief, but it is also about peace. It is about the moment the storm passes, both literally and figuratively. It is about the pain of letting go, the beauty that can follow heartbreak, and the hope that love does not end here.

EVEN THE SKIES – FULL LYRICS
“Even the skies have tears…”
Even the skies have tears. Saying goodbye is never easy. I think after all these years, maybe I’d be prepared. But losing you means losing part of me, and I don’t want to, but I don’t want you suffering. It’s not the end, we said it’s see you later. So I’ll see you later, my friend. But it doesn’t get easier, and even the skies have tears.
I love you so much it hurts. Can’t put it into words. The days have become a blur, but I’d do it all again. ‘Cause time with you meant time with family. I still hear your laughter echoing. Joy and faith beyond the pain you’ve been through. Now I’ll walk you to Heaven.
But it- So much more than words. I love you so much it hurts.
All the good times, hosting parties. All the memories flash before me. Birthday cakes and homemade recipes. Grateful for just one more day to keep on shining. You’re done fighting, go receive your healing.
Letting go means you can dance and sing hallelujahs for all eternity. Now that you’re home, the clouds are clearing. I know angels are rejoicing. You’re breathing easier, even the skies have cleared. Yeah, you’re breathing easier and even the skies have cleared.
