“Even the Skies” is a singer-songwriter song about grief, love, loss, and the quiet beauty that can follow heartbreak.

At its core, this song was inspired by walking with someone I loved through the final stage of her battle with cancer and being there as she went to heaven. It came from the experience of watching suffering, holding grief, and trying to make sense of the way nature itself seemed to reflect what we were feeling.

The first line that came to me was:

“Even the skies have tears…”

That lyric was born while I was driving through the rain on my way to hospice. It felt like the skies were grieving too.

After my loved one Kathy passed, the storm cleared. The skies became bright and breathtaking. There was a full moon, tons of stars, beautiful clouds. We even got a stunning sunset the next day after days of rain.

That shift became part of the meaning of the song too. The storm passed. The sorrow was still real, but so was the peace. So was the beauty. So was the sense that something had changed.

That is why “Even the Skies” holds both mourning and hope.

What “Even the Skies” Means

This song is about:

  1. the pain of saying goodbye
  2. the heartbreak of walking someone you love toward heaven
  3. the way grief can feel written into the world around you
  4. the peace that can come after suffering ends
  5. the beauty that sometimes appears after the storm

It is a song for people who know loss, and also a song for people who know love carries beyond it.

If you are carrying grief right now, I just want to say this gently: this song is for you.

I know grief looks different for everyone. Sometimes it is loud and raw. Sometimes it is quiet and strange. Sometimes it shows up when the skies are gray. Sometimes it shows up in the middle of a beautiful sunset when you wish you could tell someone what you are seeing.

This song is my way of honoring that kind of love. The kind that aches because it mattered.

Some songs are written from imagination.

Some are written from memory.

And some are written from a moment so real, so heartbreaking, and so sacred that you almost do not have words for it until the music helps you find them.

That is what “Even the Skies” was for me.

I started writing this song while driving to my friend Kathy’s hospice center. She was nearing the end of her battle with cancer, and I was carrying the kind of grief that feels heavy before the loss has even fully happened.

If you have ever loved someone through suffering, you probably know that feeling. It is the ache of watching someone you care about hurt, while also knowing a goodbye is coming.

That night it was raining.

As I drove, the words came to me on their own:

“Even the skies have tears…”

It felt like the world around me was grieving too. The skies felt heavy. Everything felt somber.

Kathy was not just fighting cancer. She was walking toward heaven, and those of us who loved her were walking with her as far as we could.

Then something happened that I still think about every time I hear this song.

When Kathy went to be with Jesus, the storm that had lingered for days stopped.

That night, when we walked outside, the clouds were absolutely stunning. There was a full moon, and everything felt strangely still, clear, and beautiful. The next day, the sky stayed bright, and the sunset was one of the most beautiful I had seen in a long time. As I made calls to tell people that Kathy had passed, so many of them said the same thing:

Can you believe what a beautiful day we’re having?

That stayed with me.

It felt symbolic. Like the storm had passed in more ways than one.

That is the heart behind “Even the Skies.” It is a song about grief, yes. But it is also about peace. About family forged from deep friendship and a love that lasts. About the beauty that sometimes shows up right in the middle of heartbreak. About the way sorrow and hope can sit side by side.

This song is for anyone who has lost someone they love. For anyone who has sat in a hospital room, a hospice center, a parked car, or under a sky that somehow seemed to understand. For anyone who has wondered how something can hurt so much and still hold a kind of quiet beauty.

Music has a way of helping us feel less alone in what we carry. My hope is that “Even the Skies” does that for others.

My new song, “Even the Skies,” is officially out now.

This release is deeply personal to me. I wrote it during one of the hardest and holiest moments I have ever walked through–staying by my friend Kathy’s side as she finished her battle with cancer and went to heaven.

The first verse came to me while I was driving to her hospice center in the rain the night before she passed:

“Even the skies have tears…”

It felt like the earth itself was grieving.

And then, after she passed, something remarkable happened. The storm cleared. The skies opened. There was a full moon visible by stunning clouds that parted. The next day we had one of the most beautiful sunsets I had seen in a long time. It felt like the storm had passed both literally and figuratively.

That is the heart behind this song.

“Even the Skies” is about grief, love, and the strange beauty that can meet us in the middle of heartbreak. It is a song for anyone who has had to say goodbye to someone they love and keep going with a tender heart. Learn more about the story behind the song here.

Hey everyone! I’m excited to share some fun news with you! I recently recorded Johnny Cash’s song “These Hands” for a commercial for Hoag Hospital’s Women’s Institute. Check out this home recording my friend took of the commercial on cable tv:

Recording this song for Hoag was extra special to me because—coincidentally—my nephew was born at Hoag just weeks after I found out about this opportunity. Talk about perfect timing! The staff at Hoag did a fantastic job, and I truly appreciate their dedication to my family’s care.

It feels amazing to know I sang on a commercial for an organization that went above and beyond for my own family. I know that Hoag hospital is true to their exceptional reputation.

“These Hands” was recorded at MooseCat Recording in Los Angeles with Mike, and I’m thrilled with how it turned out. My experience there was wonderful. Mike was incredibly professional and easy to work with.

It’s finally here! I’m so excited to share my music video for “Riches” with you.

I couldn’t wait to showcase this song visually because the message is so important to me.

What are some of your greatest treasures in life? More than likely, they’re the things nobody can buy or replace. Close relationships, meaningful memories, friends and family. Even your character and connection with God are a treasure no one can steal from you.

I was reminded of this when I wrote “Riches.” (Read the youtube video description to hear more about that story.) Years later, the message still rings true.

I’m going to challenge you to do something I’ve been working on all week: Think about 10 priceless things that mean the most to you. Take some time to treasure them in your heart today. If you think of a person who means a lot, let them know! I’ll be doing the same.

“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Every year I look forward to a pretty unique Valentine’s Day tradition: surprising strangers with love songs from their significant others. I spend the week leading up to this holiday memorizing love song after love song, tearing up at how special some of the lyrics are. (Yes, I’m a sappy romantic.)

Then I drive around Orange County with my guitar and pop out at homes and places of work. People I’ve never met get to hear a message from their loved one and then their first dance song, wedding song, or family favorite dedicated to them.

Giant smiles and tears make it obvious how special this gift is to each recipient, but I have to admit that it is also very powerful for me. I find it remarkable that something I love doing can sparks joy in a room that lasts long after I leave.

Music touches the heart in a way words cannot. It’s an honor to be a vessel of love in these moments, and so to everyone who has ever booked me to surprise their loved ones with the gift of song–thank you for that treasured experience. I am eager to do it again next year.

I wrote “Free in You” when I first started learning about grace. For so long, My relationship with God was marked by stress as I tried desperately to make Him happy. Lots of rules. Shame when I broke them. Pressure to get it “just right.”

Even though I had accepted the forgiveness of Jesus for past, present, and future sins, I was still living a life marked by religion—trying to keep God happy by “being good.” It was way more complicated than it needed to be.

When I started to see God as a loving Father who loves me unconditionally, who is perfectly prepared for any mess I make, who loves to teach me fun things, and who is the only person in the world who fully sees me and loves every part He created—my world changed. 

I realized I wasn’t on a tightrope after all, just a sidewalk. And I was free!

“Free in You” is a celebration and a reminder to never go back to those shackles of religion. I only want to move forward toward more and more grace.
